Password Encryption Utility

Generate secure, salted password hashes for .htpasswd files, Linux /etc/shadow and application databases.

Sent securely over HTTPS, hashed in memory and returned instantly — your password is never logged or stored.

About the password encryption utility

This tool turns a plaintext password into a one-way, salted hash in the standard Unix crypt() formats. Use it to create entries for Apache/Nginx .htpasswd files, Linux user accounts in /etc/shadow, or to store passwords safely in your own application.

Each format carries its own prefix: $2b$ bcrypt, $6$ SHA-512, $5$ SHA-256, $1$ MD5, and $apr1$ for Apache's htpasswd MD5. A unique random salt is generated for every hash, so running the same password twice gives different output — this is by design and protects against rainbow-table attacks.

For new systems, prefer bcrypt or SHA-512; MD5 and DES are included for legacy compatibility only and should not be used to protect new accounts.
